Classes

Math art is a 14-week semester long enrichment course that teaches the core components of elementary math using a Socratic method of discussion and practice, often in groups, to cultivate an intuitive understanding of mathematical concepts and avoid develop dependence on memorization. The course allows individual students to work at a pace that allows them to master one concept before building to the next. The math component of this class is augmented by an accompanying visual arts component which, in its own way, teaches the key elements of making visual including color, line, shape, texture, and composition. Math and Art are combined in this enrichment course with the intention that each discipline compliments the other- that the math class aids understanding of artistic concepts and vice versa. After completing this course a student will have developed a stronger intuitive understanding of the mathematical concepts of their grade level and greater technical and expressive understanding of visual art from both the perspective of the viewer and the creator.

Literacy

Let me tell you a story.
This elementary literacy enrichment class that uses great stories- world folk tales, fables, and modern stories- to teach the main elements of reading, writing and listening. Students will spend time listening to and reading to stories with an ear for the elements of narrative and also practice writing and telling stories of their own. This enrichment lass is meant to be interactive, educational, and fun. At the end of this class, students will learn to appreciate literature, identify the main literary elements, and improve the composition of their speaking and writing.
